Monitored Anesthesia Care
Monitored anesthesia care (MAC) is a type of anesthesia service on the spectrum from minimal/mild sedation through general anesthesia in which the anesthesiologist continually monitors and supports the patient's vital functions; administering medications as needed; and converting fluidly to other anesthesia levels as needed.
Moderate & Deep Sedation
The goals of this level of sedation is to depress consciousness while limiting the interventions needed maintain a patent airway, spontaneous ventilation, and hemodynamic stability. Generally, these levels can be maintained with a natural airway.
General Anesthesia
General anesthesia is a medication-induced loss of consciousness with an anticipated loss of protective reflexes due to anesthetic agents. During this state, the patient is unarousable to verbal, tactile, and painful stimuli. Patients undergoing General Anesthesia are assisted with airway patency and positive pressure ventilation as needed. Cardiovascular function is often managed throughout this level.

I have worked with Dr. Busto in a variety of oral and maxillofacial surgery settings from complex operating room cases such as orthognathic surgery, to more basic outpatient surgery. His familiarity with OMS results in a more seamless experience whether it is a complicated airway or hypotensive anesthesia for orthognathic surgery. While many OMS outpatient procedures may be “routine”, the anesthetic risk can be quite variable. The team approach that I always experienced with Dr. Busto allowed for safe anesthetic management of even the more complicated patients. Incorporating his service into my OMS practice truly allowed me to provide a broader level of patient service to a wider group of patients and to do so with state of the art safety at the core.
